Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as an infant. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, as well as theatre. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful tool to engage in political activism. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a young student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as an intern at an unassuming studio. From this position she started her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
